Event Details

For over 25 years, Alicia Christian has defined dignity, working to lift more than 2,000 Philadelphians from the cycle of poverty and homelessness.

Now, we honor her dedication to the lives of others with a Lifetime Achievement Award, as she formally retires from her position as executive director of Dignity Housing.

About our Honoree:

A passionate proponent of economic justice from an early age, Alicia Christian garnered over $100 million for grassroots organizations and social service agencies during her career.

After a job loss in the 1980s, the fiercely independent college graduate and single mother found herself homeless. She made a lifetime crusade of improving the plight of individuals and families whose experience she understood firsthand.

Connecting with other activists, she pushed for creation of a cabinet-level city agency (now the Office of Supportive Housing), protested conditions in city shelters, won voting rights for the homeless and fought for the right to affordable housing. In Dignity Housing, she created the first client-based African-American organization to address homelessness in the United States. Her commitment, her determination and, above all, her dignity continue to inspire us all.

The event will be held at The Downtown Club located on the 11th floor of the Public Ledger Building on 6th and Chestnut Streets. Discounted parking is available in the One Independence Hall Parking Garage located on 7th and Ranstead St. for $4 validation, if ticket stub is brought into event venue.
